03.08.10 – When applying for Finnish residence outside of Finland you would use a Finnish Consulate but because I’m already in the country I needed to apply at the Helsinki police station. Finnish beaurocracy is similar to the rest of the world. I arrived at 8AM to take a number, waited with my fellow immigrants, a mix of predominantly African and a smaller group of Asians and Indians, for over four hours before I was called in the “back room.” I spent 10 minutes going over my paperwork, shelled over 120 Euros, got the rubber stamp and was sent on my way. Apparently the process will take 6 months! We’ll see.
