Slightly off topic but I love this idea, love the photography of the different container options and would love to build one of these in Finland but I’m afraid it would turn into an icebox. Dwell magazine is one of my favorites because they would always have inexpensive highly creative architectural examples like containers as homes.

I wonder if anyone out there knows of something similar going on in Finland. If so, let me know.

Ship Me a Building: Used Shipping Containers as Architecture Tough economic times, and a growing desire to be more “green” has led to a renaissance from creative architects looking to find cheaper, more creative ways to design spaces. Ports around the world are overflowing with used, empty shipping containers, but now they are being repurposed to create funky residential and commercial structures. Shi … Read More

Woops, this one snuck through. I was just testing an app on my iPhone called PixelPipe which pushes files to other services like WordPress. I have some videos on my iPhone I want to push to Facebook. Apparently when I added WordPress it pushed this image which looks good so I’m going to leave it. So there ;)

And here I thought I moved to a safe place. Now I live in the home of the FLA, Food Liberation Army. Where do I join?

'Terrorists' kidnap Ronald McDonald in Helsinki By Sari Gustafsson | AFP News A group calling itself the Food Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for “kidnapping” a statue of the McDonald’s food chain mascot Ronald McDonald and has threatened to “execute” the figure if their demands are not met. The group posted a video on YouTube where balaclava-clad “terrorists”, holding the clown statue with a bag over its head, demanded that the world’s largest food chain answer questions about its … Read More

Sure, I’m focusing on black and white right now but there’s a big world out there full of color. Here’s a great photo blog from a guy in Indonesia. The images speak for themselves but unless you speak Indonesian ;) I would suggest getting a translator extension (I use google translate on google chrome) because his writing is entertaining too.

Kemudian sekitar awal tahun 80-an, pemerintah mengadakan program … Read More

Here’s another related story about clearing snow from the roofs of Helsinki from a Finnish photo-blogger, PPusa. Be sure to checkout his blog as he posts a picture a day.

Roofs Are Being Cleared from Snow... …all around Helsinki to protect the people on the streets and the roofs. Last year 6 persons died in Finland and at least 150 were hospitalized while doing this although earlier such accidents have been rare. A government minister caused a panic by saying that roofs should be cleared urgently. Many hurried to the slippery roofs of their single family houses without any safety precautions and too often the snow wasn’t even causing any real risk. … Read More

I guess I’m not the only one craving color in the blogosphere. There are a number of great photo blogs out there and this one caught my eye today. Check it out.

Oldie but goodie POTD 16Jan11, originally uploaded by andyskelton-a Blog a day http://andrewskelton.net. .. goodie, goodie, yum yum.  An introduction for fitting for my avian photography than a frost autumnal still life (Bill Oddie from the Goodies is as well know in the UK as an expert in the Bird Watching field). This photo is a good example of something I no longer engage in with my photography, post processing.  As I’ve mentioned before I now find that … Read More

Season of Light is becoming quite popular in Helsinki. Checkout Jacquelyn Gleisner’s blog Hellosinki for her “view.” While you’re at it, you can browse through the rest of her blog which contains a number of her paintings. Jackie’s an American on a Fulbright scholarship living in Finland and a talented artist.

Season of Light Let There Be Light! Christmas and New Year’s have passed, but the city of Helsinki is still celebrating with the Season of Light. Prominent buildings throughout the city are illuminated in an effort to brighten these darks days of winter and shed new light on Helsinki. In addition to the light installations, there are also other attractions, including a Fire Circus. The festivities began on New Year’s Eve and will continue until January 9th. Vill … Read More
