05.11.10 – Not much to report. Luckily life is mellowing out a bit and I’m looking forward to a peaceful weekend.
My friend Mus’ab called up and asked me if I wanted to go out and meet some friends from our class to hear some live music. He told me they were meeting at a pub close to where I live called Sir Eino on Esplanadi. I asked him who was playing. “The Beatles.” … Ok, I’m in.
I found out later the full name is Jiri Nikkinen The Beatles Tribute Band. The music was good even though, I hate to admit, I’m not the biggest Beatles fan. I do love their depressing stuff, George Harrison was my favorite Beatle, and the band did a great cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. I almost got in some trouble when they started playing Back in the USSR and I told my friends “Oh, I can’t wait to tell everyone back home I was listening to Back in the USSR with two girls from the old Soviet Union!” Jane, who is from Belarus, got a little excited and started with “Well Tom, you know, Belarus is not Russia!” Ok, ok, I’m sorry, I know the difference between Russia and the USSR 😉 She’s cool!
We had a great time and I can’t wait to go out with them again. Jane and Bazhena were also talking about some great live Balkan music you can hear in Helsinki so that might be one of our next music night out. Keep fingers crossed!
