20.11.10 – No, Pitkät Kalsarit is not a Finnish author/poet from the 18th century. One of Max’s teachers told me, you must learn this word… in that solemn tone Finns use to emphasize something as if your life depended on it. Pitkät Kalsarit, aka “Sex Killers”, are just another part of your winter wardrobe which will make your life so much more bearable in Finland’s harsh climate, long underwear!
I headed out to Espoo, a suburb of Helsinki, where like most suburbs of big cities you can find the newer shopping malls. Tania, a friend from my Finnish class and also a supermodel from the Ukraine ;), lives in Espoo and was kind enough to meet me at the Sello mall with her boyfriend to help me look for some winter gear. I was also looking for warm water proof shoes. Luckily we found the “sex killers” but I also learned that I must have the biggest feet in Finland. Apparently most of the shoes, at least in Sello mall, were up to one size smaller than my size yet the long underwear were in sizes way bigger than I needed. Try to figure that one out???
I did find some perfect indoor shoes, or what I like to call “muckluks”. Not the best shot but here are my new purchases.
We had dinner at a nice little Thai restaurant and I headed home warmer and a bit more comfortable.
