03.06.11Cafe Regatta is one of my favorite cafes in Helsinki. I try to get out there on the weekends. Emma and I were out there last weekend. It’s a great place because it’s outside the crowded city center. They also have great outside seating with a fire pit and you can buy makkara, Finnish hot dogs, and roast them outside. They also have the best pulla. Emma and I had a blast.

29.05.11 – I love my bikes and luckily Helsinki does too. Helsinki is a great city to bike in. There are tons of bike paths throughout the city and I’ve already found a few sections where you can get off the streets and into the woods. I usually only ride on the weekends but hopefully that will be changing as the days grow longer and warmer.

My current “loop” takes me out along Ruoholahti, through Hietaniemi, pass through Meilahti, East side of Munkkiniemi, over Pikku Huopolahti and then back to the town center in a huge wooded section between Ruskeasuo and Länsi-Pasila, through the olympic park, skirt around Töölönlahti and finally stop at Mbar terrace for a beer or two before heading home.

Anyone care to join me?

28.05.11 – Here’s some interesting outdoor art I found in Helsinki. Several lines were strung across an intersection, each one had several old, colorful, shirts and dresses. What made it even more special was the beautiful breeze blowing that day.

13.05.11 – I know I am!

Things have been crazy for the last couple of months and I wish I could say things are getting easier, but I can’t. This is not such a terrible thing though. I am making progress on my cafe and guess what… it’s a bit harder than I thought it was going to be😉 I may not be able to say it’s getting easier but I am moving forward and getting used to the daily routine. Hopefully I’ll have more time to blog😉 I’ll keep you posted but this is a start.

21.03.11Finland does not have Daylight Saving Time. There’s no need. Finland’s high latitude means that sunset and sunrise times change by many hours over the year, and the effect of changing the clock by one hour would, in comparison, be small. As for longer days? I say bring it on😉

12.03.11 – The winters last long in Finland but every day you can feel spring approaching. The days are getting longer, the temperatures are slowly but steadily climbing and the white canvas of snow is starting to melt away. More and more color is making its way into my world😉

11.03.11 – Finns make the most of their world when it’s all iced over. It’s common to see people ice fishing, walking and nordic skiing on the frozen Baltic but the other day I was watching a group of people take turns on an “ice boat.” The day seemed perfect for ice boating because the sun was out and there was a strong breeze blowing. They really picked up speed quick. When you walk on the ice you notice how smooth most of the surface is but you also come across some areas where there are deep cracks and large bumps. I watched three boys in their teens take turns out on the ice and they didn’t have a problem. Good for them!
