18.12.10 – Tis the season of song and joy.
Jaana, Max and I went to a Christmas concert held at the Uspenski Cathedral, the Eastern Orthodox cathedral close to Jaana’s apartment. The group, Lumen Valo, which means light snow in Finnish, is an ensemble consisting of eight vocalists which specializes in vocal music of the Renaissance. Mysterium is their popular Christmas time concert. Their site described the concert as “one of the only western cities, where its possible to hear mainly Lutheran performers singing Catholic hymns in a Greek-Orthodox cathedral!” The concert lasted an hour and ended with the vocalists lining up directly in front of the audience and encouraging everyone to join in for Maa on Niin Kaunis (The Country is so Beautiful), a spiritual song which is very popular in Finland. It was touching to say the least.
